Chapter 148 Competition Spots
Chapter 148 Competition Spots
Haigeng Training Base Office.
Zou Zhen, Jiang Jianjun, Wang Qiao, and other coaches from various disciplines sat together, many of them unaware of the leader's intention in gathering them together.
"Coach Jiang, the routine meeting wasn't today! Why were we suddenly notified to come? You're usually the most well-informed person, could you have given me a heads-up?"
After one coach asked the question, the other coaches also looked at Jiang Jianjun with questioning eyes.
Coach Jiang turned around and saw everyone looking at him: "How can you veterans be so forgetful! Just take out the annual track and field event plan and the answer will be clear."
"Yeah, how come I didn't think of that! Does anyone have a track and field event schedule for the next few years?"
"Why would I need to bring that? All the events at the beginning of the year were indoor competitions. February was the Asian Indoor Championships in Doha, and March was the World Athletics Championships. I don't remember where they were held."
"Oh, if that's the case, then it's basically the Asian Athletics Championships. Look, Coach Sun didn't even come. People don't even take this kind of competition seriously!"
"You hindsight experts are all suddenly very insightful!" Jiang Jianjun said, shaking his head helplessly.
Just then, Yu Wei walked into the conference room. When everyone saw the leader enter, they immediately fell silent.
"Sorry, the leaders just finished a meeting with us, and I came down from the third floor right after. I'm sorry to have kept you all waiting. Sigh, coaching was the happiest time, when all you had to do was focus on results. Our work now is so complicated. Only when you're a junior manager do you realize there are higher-ups. Coach Feng is still reporting over there right now. I told him to hurry up and come out of the meeting, life is tough!"
Yu Wei's self-deprecating remarks lightened the atmosphere in the meeting room, but no one spoke. Having spent so long in the administrative unit, everyone knew that the leader was about to get down to business.
"I called you all here today to discuss something. A couple of days ago, we received an invitation from the organizing committee of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships. The competition will be held on the 14th and 15th of next month. Originally, these competitions were supposed to be for the youth team, but after thinking about it, I wanted to ask if any of you would like to give your team members some experience. If so, I'll submit the roster, and the rest can be sent by the youth team. What are your thoughts?"
Yu Wei spoke slowly and deliberately.
People immediately started discussing it. Many coaches felt that this competition was a bit low-level, and that each country would probably use youth teams plus second-tier players to form teams to participate.
Although they weren't very interested in the competition, no one spoke. Apart from a few newcomers like Wang Qiao, everyone else present was a seasoned veteran from the track and field team, very smooth in their dealings.
Leading by example and expressing reluctance to send team members, while it may be understandable to say so openly, will always leave the leader with the impression of being unambitious.
Nobody wanted to run into bad luck in an Olympic year, so everyone kept quiet.
"Um... never mind, I won't ask anymore. If any team members are planning to participate, please register with An Jian before 4 PM today. Then let's adjourn the meeting!"
The meeting lasted a total of 20 minutes, from the time everyone entered and waited for Yu Wei until it ended. Everyone generally appreciated this leader's work style.
Yu Wei was an athlete on the Chinese national track and field team in the 1960s, and became a coach after retiring. To date, he has worked in almost every position on the track and field team.
Leaders who have risen through the ranks understand the plight of grassroots coaches best, which is why they never engage in lengthy discussions during meetings. It's not that they lack the ability, but rather that they don't want to waste everyone's time. They believe that spending that time watching TV, chatting, and thinking about upcoming training sessions is far more meaningful than sitting there with their minds blank.
When it comes to important matters, you can explain the implications in just a few words. Repeating yourself will only cause others to change their plans.
Upon hearing that the meeting was adjourned, everyone prepared to return to the training ground. It was only 10 a.m., truly the prime time for the team members to train. Without much pleasantry, most people headed straight for the training ground.
"By the way, Lao Jiang, Lao Zou, Coach Wang, stay behind for a moment, I have something to tell you."
The group of people who had almost left turned back.
"Boss, I'm afraid you're going to select athletes from our sprint team?"
After Zou Zhen and the others left the meeting room, they asked casually, "Yu Wei was originally a sprinter and attaches great importance to sprinting. He was the one who appointed Zou Zhen as the head of the sprint coaching team."
"Then I'll get straight to the point. I'd like to give the two 60-meter spots to the sprint team for this Asian Indoor Championships. The current team members are all quite young, so we can consider having them participate in competitions to gain more experience. Shen Liang is 18, Lu Wei is 20, and Zhang Yuanteng and Hu Huo are also quite young. Do you want to decide on the spots now or discuss it further later?"
Zou Zhen was someone he had personally promoted, so he was considered one of his own. Coach Jiang also had a good relationship with him, so Yu Wei directly expressed his thoughts.
"I think we should let Shen Liang and Lu Wei go. These two lads have been competing in the 60 meters every day lately, they're really enthusiastic. I think we should let them participate in the competition. Coach Jiang, Xiao Wang, what do you guys think?"
After expressing his opinion, Zou Zhen consulted with Coach Jiang and Wang Qiao. He could actually make the decision himself, but out of respect, he wanted to hear everyone's opinions. He also tried to discuss things with others as much as possible regarding work matters.
Jiang Jianjun put his hand on his chin, thought for a moment, and said, "That's also possible, but the relay team has 5 people, so it might not be good to directly designate someone. Although it's understandable to do so, I'm afraid some team members will feel it's unbalanced, which might affect the training enthusiasm of other team members."
Jiang Jianjun stopped there, since he wasn't in charge of the sprint team, and that was enough. He left the rest to Zou Zhen to decide.
"Coach Jiang agrees. I'm just a stubborn person, and I've made everyone laugh at me! So how about this, let's have five people have a match tomorrow. If there are no special circumstances, the top two will go to the competition. The training volume has already increased this morning, so let's set the time for tomorrow morning!"
"By the way, boss, registering tomorrow shouldn't be too late, right?"
Zou Zhen was a straightforward person and didn't feel that Jiang Jianjun's suggestion was hindering his work arrangements.
"Let's do it your way. I'll let you know later!"
Yu Wei was also in a good mood. He admired Zou Zhen's efficient and quick work style the most, and he thought that such a personality was very suitable for being a coach.
The only drawback is that Zou Zhen has a rather rough personality; he's a typical roughneck and often doesn't consider things comprehensively enough. However, with Jiang Jianjun as his strategist offering advice, the sprint team's work proceeded much more smoothly.
