Chapter 247 I heard the old man was looking for you today?
Han Shuang paused, as if choosing her words carefully, "He...he wants to talk to you."
Qin Reng's fingers tightened slightly as he held the phone. After a moment of silence, he said, "I understand, Mom."
Yu Yuetong keenly noticed the change in Qin Reng's emotions and cautiously asked, "What's wrong? Did something happen?"
Qin Reng hung up the phone, took a deep breath, and tried to suppress his inner turmoil. He said, "It was my dad calling."
"Your dad?" Yu Yuetong was taken aback for a moment, then realized, "What is he going to do? Could it be that he wants to..."
"He wants to see me." Qin Reng's tone was calm, but Yu Yuetong detected a subtle change in his voice. "Moreover, he wants to see me alone."
Yu Yuetong pursed her lips and muttered under her breath, "Meeting you alone? Is this some kind of trap?"
Qin Reng didn't reply, but instead sped up. A hush fell over the carriage, the atmosphere becoming unusually heavy.
Back at the villa, Qin Reng headed straight for the study, his back view appearing somewhat cold and aloof. Yu Yuetong hesitated for a moment, then followed him.
"Hey," she said, peeking out from the study doorway, "Are you really going to see him?"
Qin Reng sat at his desk, rubbed his temples, and said wearily, "You can run from the first day of the month, but you can't run from the fifteenth."
“But…” Yu Yuetong wanted to say something, but Qin Reng interrupted her.
"Alright, I know what I'm doing." Qin Reng raised his head and looked at her with a deep gaze. "Go back to your room and rest."
Yu Yuetong opened her mouth, but ultimately said nothing and turned to leave the study.
As night fell and the city lights came on, a black sedan slowly drove into the gate of the Qin family villa.
Qin Reng sat in the back seat, looking at the familiar scenery, his heart filled with mixed emotions. He rarely returned to this home, and didn't have any deep feelings for it. In his heart, this place was more like a cold cage than a real home.
The car stopped at the entrance, Qin Reng got out, took a deep breath, and stepped into the villa.
The living room was brightly lit, yet completely silent. Qin Xian sat upright on the sofa, holding a glass of red wine, swirling it gently.
"Dad." Qin Reng walked up to him and greeted him in a calm tone.
Qin Xian looked up at his son, who bore a striking resemblance to him, his expression complex. He put down his wine glass, gestured to the sofa opposite him, and said, "Sit down."
Qin Reng sat down as instructed, with a distance between them, creating an awkward and heavy atmosphere.
"How have you been lately?" Qin Xian broke the silence first, asking in a detached tone.
"It's alright," Qin Reng replied simply.
Qin Xian nodded, his gaze falling on Qin Reng as if scrutinizing him. "I heard the old man looked for you today?"
"Yes." Qin Reng did not deny it.
"Regarding the child..." Qin Xian paused, his tone becoming more meaningful, "What do you think?"
Qin Reng looked directly into his father's eyes and said slowly, "Grandpa is getting old, so it's understandable that he's a little anxious. Miss Yu and I will do our best."
"Do your best?" Qin Xian sneered. "Are you just trying to brush me off?"
Qin Reng said expressionlessly, "That's not what I meant."
"Qin Reng," Qin Xian's voice lowered, carrying a hint of warning, "don't forget who gave you everything you have now."
Qin Reng's heart sank, and a surge of anger welled up from the bottom of his heart. He clenched his fists, trying hard to control his emotions, and said, word by word, "Dad, I understand what you mean. But everything I have now is not entirely dependent on the Qin family."
Qin Xian raised an eyebrow, looking at him with a half-smile, "Oh? So, you've gotten too big for your britches?"
Qin Reng took a deep breath, suppressing his anger, and said, "I just don't want to be controlled by others anymore."
Qin Xian remained silent for a moment, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes. After a long while, he slowly spoke: "It seems you already know some things."
Qin Reng did not respond, but simply waited quietly for his father to continue.
Qin Xian sighed, sounding somewhat weary. "Fine, since you've brought it up, I won't hide it from you anymore."
He paused, as if gathering his thoughts, and then continued, "When your mother passed away, the reason I opposed your marriage to that girl from the Yu family wasn't because they were not a good match, but because..."
Qin Xian paused, as if he found it difficult to speak, "It's because the Yu family's situation... is somewhat complicated."
He took a sip of his drink and continued, "The upheaval that befell the Yu family back then was no accident. The old man also played a role in it."
Qin Reng suddenly raised his head, looking at his father in disbelief. "What did you say?"
Qin Xian put down his wine glass and looked directly into Qin Reng's eyes. "I know you're surprised, but that's the truth. The reason the old man insisted that you marry the girl from the Yu family wasn't just because he liked her, but more because... he wanted to control her."
"Control?" Qin Reng's voice trembled slightly, and a chill ran up from the soles of his feet.
“Although the Yu family is now in decline, even a fallen camel is bigger than a horse. The old man is worried that the Yu family will make a comeback, which will affect the Qin family’s status. Therefore, he arranged your marriage with the Yu family’s girl to keep the Yu family in check,” Qin Xian explained. “Of course, I also bear some responsibility for this. I thought the Yu family’s girl would be a burden to you and would affect your future, so I strongly opposed it at first.”
Qin Reng felt his head buzzing. He never imagined that such a truth was hidden behind his marriage to Yu Yuetong. A surge of anger at being deceived burned in his chest. He clenched his fists tightly, his nails digging deep into his flesh, yet he felt no pain.
"So, from the very beginning, my marriage to Miss Yu was just a transaction?" Qin Reng's voice was icy cold, tinged with self-mockery.
Qin Xian did not deny it, but sighed, "Qin Reng, I hope you can understand that your grandfather and I did this for the good of the Qin family."
"For the good of the Qin family?" Qin Reng sneered. "For the good of the Qin family, can I sacrifice my happiness? For the good of the Qin family, can I control my life at will?"
His emotions grew increasingly agitated, and his voice rose higher and higher, "Dad, am I really your son? Why do I feel like I'm just a pawn?"
Seeing his son's angry expression, Qin Xian felt a pang of pity. He reached out to try and soothe Qin Reng, but Qin Reng shoved him away.
"Enough!" Qin Reng stood up, looking down at his father. "If you called me back today just to tell me this, then I've heard it. If there's nothing else, I'll be leaving now."
After saying that, he turned around and left.
