Chapter 266 Are you all alright?
Chapter 266 Are you all alright?
Yu Yuetong's palms began to sweat. Had they really been discovered? Was her secret of switching bodies with Qin Reng about to be exposed?
“Reng’er in the past would never have shown that kind of expression to your wife,” the old lady said meaningfully, “that…fearful expression.”
Yu Yuetong was stunned. She hadn't expected the old lady to say that.
"Do you think she's not good enough for you?" the old lady suddenly asked.
"No!" Yu Yuetong denied instinctively, her voice much louder than she had expected. Seeing the old lady's surprised look, she quickly lowered her voice, "I mean... it's not like that."
"What is it?" the old lady pressed. "Do you know, Reng'er, the way you look at her lately is like you're looking at a time bomb."
Yu Yuetong gave a bitter smile. It wasn't just a time bomb, it was practically a nuclear bomb. She worried every day that Qin Reng would cause some kind of trouble inside her.
“Grandma, I just…” she carefully chose her words, “feeling that I’m not good enough for her.”
The moment those words left her mouth, Yu Yuetong regretted them. She saw the old lady's eyes suddenly light up.
"Oh?" The old lady put down her teacup. "Tell me about it."
“She’s outstanding,” Yu Yuetong continued, forcing herself to continue her fabrication, “gentle, understanding, and also…” and what else? She couldn’t very well say, “She can also manage the company perfectly well inside my body,” could she?
"So you're avoiding her?" The old lady raised an eyebrow. "Just letting her face all that gossip alone?"
Yu Yuetong was startled. She suddenly realized that Qin Reng, residing in her body, would indeed face a lot of criticism. After all, in the eyes of outsiders, she, Yu Yuetong, was nothing more than a fallen heiress who had climbed the social ladder.
“You know what,” the old lady’s voice suddenly softened, “she is much stronger than you think.”
Yu Yuetong raised her head and met the old lady's kind gaze.
“I let her marry you not because she needs your protection,” the old lady said, “but because I felt that you need her.”
These words struck Yu Yuetong like a hammer blow, leaving her dizzy and disoriented. She suddenly understood why the original owner of this body had married Qin Reng out of gratitude for being saved. Even Qin Reng himself was probably unaware of the old lady's true intentions.
“So,” the old lady stood up and patted Yu Yuetong on the shoulder, “stop avoiding her. Go talk to her and have a good talk with her.”
Yu Yuetong nodded blankly, but in her mind she was thinking: Who should she say this to? To Qin Reng, who was occupying her body, or to herself inside her body?
At this moment, there was a rush of footsteps outside the door.
"Madam!" The butler rushed in, flustered. "Something terrible has happened! Madam and Miss Ji are in the garden..."
Yu Yuetong's heart jumped.
Before the housekeeper could finish speaking, Yu Yuetong had already rushed out. Her heart was pounding, fearing that Qin Reng would cause some more trouble inside her.
A shrill female voice rang out from the garden: "What right do you have to say that to me?"
Yu Yuetong looked in the direction of the sound and saw Ji Momo pointing at "Yu Yuetong's" nose, her face ashen. Qin Reng—the Qin Reng now inside her body—was looking coldly at Ji Momo, a mocking smile on his lips.
Han Shuang stood to the side, her face full of anxiety, trying to comfort her: "Mo Mo, don't be angry, Yue Tong didn't mean it that way..."
"That's not what she meant?" Ji Momo sneered. "She said I'm a bastard daughter who can't be presented in public. What else could that mean?"
Yu Yuetong's heart sank. That damned Qin Reng, how could he say such a thing? Wasn't he ruining her reputation?
"I..." Qin Reng was about to speak when Yu Yuetong quickly strode over.
“Miss Ji,” she said in Qin Reng’s voice, with a hint of apology in her tone, “My wife is not feeling well today and may have said something a little too harsh. Please forgive her for her rudeness.”
Ji Momo was stunned for a moment, clearly not expecting the usually arrogant Qin Reng to say such a thing. She turned to look at Yu Yuetong, her expression becoming subtle.
"Reng'er?" Han Shuang looked at her "son" in surprise. "You today..."
“Mom,” Yu Yuetong interrupted her, “Yuetong has been working very hard at the company lately. I’ll take her back to her room to rest.” With that, she grabbed Qin Reng’s wrist and left without saying another word.
Qin Reng was dragged a few steps by her when he suddenly shook off her hand: "Let go!"
The coquettish voice that came from Yu Yuetong's mouth startled both Ji Momo and Han Shuang. Yu Yuetong wanted to kick Qin Reng; how could this guy not even control his tone of voice?
“Madam,” Yu Yuetong said through gritted teeth, “we should go back to our room.”
Qin Reng glared at her, then reluctantly followed her back. Behind them came Ji Momo's thoughtful gaze and Han Shuang's puzzled sigh.
Back in her room, Yu Yuetong immediately closed the door: "Are you crazy? Why did you say that about Ji Momo?"
"She deserves it." Qin Reng sneered. "She was sarcastic and sarcastic towards me at the company. Did she think I didn't know what she was up to?"
"You mean she likes you..." Yu Yuetong suddenly remembered the original plot, "Wait, could it be that she's fallen for you?"
"What?" Qin Reng frowned. "She clearly likes you."
"No, it's you!" Yu Yuetong pointed to her current body. "She likes Qin Reng, but because I'm inside your body now, she..."
They both froze halfway through their sentence.
"So now she..." Qin Reng's expression became quite interesting.
“Yes,” Yu Yuetong said gleefully, “she actually likes me now.”
Qin Reng's expression twisted slightly: "Disgusting."
“Same to you.” Yu Yuetong rolled her eyes. “Now you know what I face at the company every day, right? The way those directors look at me is even more blatant than Ji Momo’s.”
Qin Reng's expression darkened further. He opened his mouth as if to say something, but was interrupted by a sudden knock on the door.
"Reng'er? Yue Tong?" It was Han Shuang's voice. "Are you alright?"
The two exchanged a glance and saw panic in each other's eyes.
“It’s nothing, Mom,” Yu Yuetong quickly replied in Qin Reng’s voice, “We were just talking about work.”
"Talking about work so late?" Han Shuang's tone was somewhat reproachful. "Yue Tong has been working hard enough at the company lately, don't you even care about her?"
Qin Reng's lips twitched upon hearing this. Seeing his expression, Yu Yuetong quickly tried to smooth things over, "I understand, Mom. We'll rest right away."
"Then...may I come in and see you?"
"No need!" they both shouted in unison.
There was a moment of silence outside the door, then Han Shuang's voice suddenly became ambiguous: "Oh, I see. Then Mom won't disturb you two. Remember to get some rest."
The footsteps faded into the distance, but the atmosphere in the room became even more awkward.
