Chapter 261 – The Battle That Would Be Known as the Fifth Blackfyre Rebellion.
[Chapter Size: 2500 Words.]
Third Person POV.
King's Landing.
...
...
"I will go to the defense, Ser Jorah Mormont, take care of Aegon as if your life depended on it," Jon Connington snarled as he took his horse. He did not fail to look at Aegon one last time.
"Aegon, remember. You are the king! Be strong, stand firm. The men need you." With that, he mounted the horse.
"Now I will go to the front line, someone needs to lead a defense against the cavalry. Ser Jorah, remember, do not let that bastard get near the king!"
"I would do so as if my life depended on it, my lord." Ser Jorah said.
With those words, Jon Connington waved and advanced to the northwestern line, shouting orders to organize a defense against the enemy's massive cavalry.
Meanwhile, to the north.
The horses finally advanced against the flames. It was suicide from the perspective of outsiders. Fear was stamped on the soldiers' faces, the dread of passing through the towers of fire, but they had no other choice. Otherwise, the cold would kill them. Therefore, they needed to attack the enemy from the north if they wanted any chance.
There were 12 thousand horses initially, but the green dragon burned about 2 thousand of them with those flames.
Now, there were ten thousand horses advancing, even without Tarly to command them. Another took his place.
Then the first contact came against the flames. The first horses passed through, the horses themselves neighed in fear and men roared to give themselves courage, there was no longer any way to stop there. Even if a horse tried to disobey, they were already upon it — there was no turning back.
And on the other side of the flames, Daemon's soldiers were positioned, the men of the free folk, who were mostly in the line of archers, were following orders from Brynden Tully, even though they did not like following a lord from south of the Wall, Daemon said that he needed them to make this exception since Brynden was a very experienced commander.
"They are passing through the flames!" A warg who had just left the mind of a bird in the sky shouted to Brynden.
"Prepare bows!" Lord Tully shouted.
Thousands of bows, as they had trained beyond the Wall, began to be raised.
"Wait for my command!!" They waited, still holding their bows raised.
The first horses advanced out of the flames, but also surrounded by fire, while immediately falling to the ground, both riders and horses screaming, burned alive, while others managed to pass without being burned much.
Obviously, Lord Tully was clever in demanding all the water from the camp to drench both horses and men. Giving more resistance to the men to pass through the flames, not all managed it, but most of the riders had poured buckets of water over themselves and their horses.
"Wait for my command!" While the bows remained aimed at the enemies, the cavalry advanced, leaving behind burned horses with frozen riders, still advancing in great numbers. Many were burned and roaring in pain, yet they continued.
When they entered the line, Lord Tully gave the order: "Fire!"
Quickly, a volley of arrows soared into the sky before beginning to strike the cavalry, with horses immediately falling to the ground and creating a certain chaos, while others crashed over one another. Even so, many horses continued advancing.
"Prepare! Fire!" Another volley of arrows flew, striking another group of horses and riders.
"There is no more time!", someone murmured beside Lord Stark.
"Prepare shields!" Ned shouted.
The men of the North, the Riverlands, the Westerlands, and the Crownlands were under Lord Stark's command. Upon hearing the order, "Prepare shields!", they quickly positioned themselves.
But the defense was divided in two within the infantry. On the other side, most of the army was made up of the free folk and was under Mance's command, who had all the free folk infantry, as well as the heavy hitters — the giants.
They also prepared themselves, positioning more toward the center, while giant shields were placed in front.
The impact of the cavalry came. There was nowhere to flee, and there were still four thousand horses advancing.
The first to be struck were the giants, who immediately caused the horses to crash against them, unable to move them even an inch. Meanwhile, the first giants held firm, as did all nearly 30 giants. That line became impenetrable.
While wielding spears, they immediately began thrusting them through the gaps in the shields, massacring the men on the ground.
With the exception of the giants, Lord Stark's defense fared better than Mance's, holding well, but still many horses broke through, crushing some of the free folk who did not have as much discipline as the men who fought in the War of the Four Kings.
Those under Lord Stark's command even managed to pierce some of the defenses, but were soon cut down within the army, as they could not go very far with so many men in defense.
Mance had a bit more difficulty. Many horses broke through, crushing several free folk. However, they also began to be defeated one by one, while those who remained started to ask for surrender.
The free folk were relentless and violent when it came to individual combat. They did not spare those who had killed their men upon entering their midst — they were killed even while trying to surrender.
As for the riders who were still out of reach of the shields, who had not entered any defense, they had given up before even advancing against the enemy shields. They were not as brave and determined as those who had advanced.
Lord Stark accepted their surrender.
While everyone watched, celebrating, the first enemy charge had already been destroyed, with minimal losses. They still watched the flames when shouts began to come from the other side.
It seemed that the allied charge commanded by Stannis had finally reached the enemy army.
From the enemy side, one could hear the sound of horses against shields, tens of thousands of them, creating a tremendous crash.
A moment earlier, Jon Connington arrived at the entrance, observing the enormous cavalry coming.
"Shields! Form a formation!", he shouted to more than fifty thousand men.
His voice did not reach everyone, but quickly the commanders began to shout together, and they moved forward, raising their shields.
"Hold firm! We can defeat them!", Connington shouted forcefully, as his men began to form lines, one behind the other, creating a system that would make it difficult for the cavalry to push through.
"Move! Move!" Meanwhile, on the other side, Stannis shouted, drawing his sword and advancing at full speed at the front of the cavalry.
"We can win! Let's finish these bastards!" Jon continued trying to raise the morale of Aegon's army. His men roared, gaining some of it, but it was possible to see that recent events did not leave them very optimistic, as the cavalry drew ever closer.
Daemon, who was still massacring men to the east, trying to reach Aegon, killed one man after another while continuing to advance.
He saw the cavalry coming. And then he smiled as he saw a white mass descending from the sky.
"It's time for this..." He said as soon as he beheaded a rider with Dark Sister, gaining a few seconds.
Then he raised his head and let out another roar. "Mid Vur Shaan!!!"
The roar went to the sky like thunder.
His main ability when it came to war. After all, this Thu'um was meant to increase the power of all allies. It would enhance their strength and their weapons, making them attack much faster.
An ability he used in the war of Skyrim, even when fighting against a force greater than his own, this roar changed the expectation of battle from the very beginning.
Now, tens of thousands of people were about to be affected in that cavalry. The moment his roar echoed, an aura began to spread throughout the cavalry.
They seemed more powerful now. The enemies noticed it, the enemy seemed far more intimidating. Their shields trembled.
Connington tried to shout. "Hold firm! Hold firm! Do not let these bastards pass!"
Then, a roar emerged. His eyes widened as he looked to the sky, seeing the white mass advancing directly toward the lines with shields and spears.
That made him and all his men feel their souls leaving their bodies. The dragon approached at maximum speed and roared. Everyone thought it would unleash flames, and the ranks began to break, with many starting to flee immediately.
Jon Connington froze, waiting for death. But the dragon did not unleash its flames.
It only came close enough, roaring, while frightening the entire line and then ascending back into the sky.
It was a bluff.
Daemon could not unleash the ice flames there, otherwise his allies would be equally harmed. But that alone created an opening for the cavalry.
Even with the horses somewhat frightened by the dragon's roar nearby, they still advanced.
Stannis advanced through the broken parts of the formation, immediately striking the first enemy, who barely had time to react, as the horse simply crushed him beneath his shield, throwing him to the ground with his arms already breaking in the process under the weight of Stannis's horse's hooves.
Cries of pain came soon after, as some shields managed to raise their spears against the horses, striking them as they screamed in pain.
But most advanced quickly, breaking everything with the thunderous sound of the cavalry crushing men.
In the next moment, 'massacre' was the most appropriate word for what followed. The cavalry attacked with spears and swords, so fast that the enemy could barely dodge or counterattack.
Jon Connington was there behind, stunned, as he saw Stannis coming toward him with a sword in hand. "I will still take this bastard...", he muttered to himself.
There was no more way to flee. The cavalry was already overrunning everything. Either he would take one of their commanders, or he would die like a coward trying to flee. He had not spent almost twenty years of his life preparing for such a cowardly end.
But he accepted it, he had already lost, the rest of Aegon's army would not be prepared for thirty thousand men on horseback massacring everything in a charge... And then he advanced against Stannis.
The cavalry was already entering the enemy field.
The soldiers of the Golden Company, the Reach, and Dorne were frightened, seeing the camp being invaded. Many fell, but there were still nearly thirty thousand who had already crushed all the defense, with most running and trying to flee while being trampled.
Stannis immediately parried the first sword strike he received from Jon Connington.
"Damn traitor!", Connington said, roaring before advancing again.
"Look who's talking," Stannis replied after stepping back slightly.
"House Connington will no longer exist beyond being a political disgrace, from this day on, Jon Connington. Your banners will be judged by all, your castle will be despised and everyone will remember you and your choices... and you will be nothing more than a name in history as the traitor who brought a Blackfyre to Westeros.", Stannis said in a dry tone.
House Baratheon was his liege in the Stormlands! So House Connington should be vassal to the Baratheons!
Jon Connington roared and advanced upon hearing this.
There was another clash of swords. Jon retreated before advancing again.
When Stannis was about to attack, Jon Connington deflected the blow and aimed not at him, but at the horse, striking the animal's head.
The horse roared in pain, unbalancing Stannis as both fell to the ground, the animal agonizing.
Connington opened a malicious smile, while Stannis was left breathless, trying to recover from the fall.
Connington wasted no time. He grabbed a spear still on the ground, even while atop his horse, and advanced to strike some men.
But many saw it. Immediately, Robb, who was fighting, grabbed another spear and threw it at Jon Connington's horse, striking it directly in the heart.
The animal fell to the ground, and Jon Connington was also left breathless for a moment.
Stannis stood up, looking with fury. First, he went to the agonizing horse and freed it from its suffering, killing it with a blow to the heart by piercing it with his sword.
"I liked that horse very much... Damn it...", Stannis muttered angrily.
Jon Connington was already recovering. He raised his sword.
Stannis advanced, striking with fury. The two began to exchange blows, but Connington was at a disadvantage. He had not yet recovered from the fall, feeling his shoulder slightly dislocated.
This caused him to start losing the fight quickly.
Stannis's sword struck the side of his armor, denting it slightly, as Connington took a few steps back.
But Stannis gave him no opening to recover. He struck him again in the arm, as he tried to raise his sword, feeling the pain despite the armor protecting him.
Stannis advanced once more, striking the sword arm, making Connington drop it. Then he struck him in the chest, causing Jon Connington to fall to the ground, stunned.
He did not even have time to react. Stannis was already over him, finding the gap between the helm and the breastplate, striking the neck.
The sword pierced Connington's skin, and he agonized in pain. Blood immediately began to gush from his neck.
He seemed to want to say something, something like 'Aegon...' As he died...
Jon Connington died shortly after.
Stannis was already trying to regain leadership of his men, mounting another horse, as he saw the cavalry devastating the enemy, who were clearly not prepared to deal with them.
Meanwhile, Daemon unleashed another Thu'um of flames, burning a hundred men around him.
He took the opportunity to enter Winter's mind for a moment, his eyes turning white, as the dragon flew over the battlefield, seeing the devastation the cavalry was causing.
The giant elephants of the Golden Company that had been burned alive died before even reaching the line of flames in front of King's Landing.
The elephants that managed to escape — some were killed, but most — which Daemon had ordered to advance into the Kingswood to the west, were arriving there. Meanwhile, Aegon's men were also fleeing along with the elephants into the Kingswood. They had already given up the fight in the midst of all that chaos.
He took one last look with Winter at where Aegon was, Daemon observed the flames still burning and, beyond them, the battlefield.
He already knew where to find Aegon Blackfyre. Now, he needed to advance there.
"Let's end this, Blackfyre."
He had two Blackfyres there to kill. And they had nowhere to run.
He could even feel Varys in desperation, trying to flee along with his nephew, they were surrounded. And Daemon was already going toward them.
