Chapter 386: A Qualified Creditor
Chapter 386: A Qualified Creditor
Vera Xavier chuckled softly. "How am I going too far? I’m simply trying to be a competent creditor."
As she spoke, she finished writing and handed the slip of paper to Susan Caldwell. "This is my address. If you manage to pay me back early, bring the money here. Oh, and it seems you don’t know my name yet. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Vera Xavier."
When Susan Caldwell saw the address on the note and heard Vera Xavier’s name, she instantly lost control. "You’re Vera Xavier!"
If there was one person Susan Caldwell never wanted to meet in her entire life, it was Vera Xavier. The switched-at-birth scheme from eighteen years ago had completely altered both their destinies.
In Susan Caldwell’s mind, even though she’d heard some things about Vera Xavier from Rona Langdon, Vera was still nothing more than a country girl. ’Even if she’s come to the city, she’s just an uncultured bumpkin who’s never seen the world. She’s beneath my notice.’
But this time, she had suffered a major defeat at Vera Xavier’s hands. In her view, she could have lost to anyone—just not Vera Xavier!
Seeing her reaction, a flash of mockery crossed Vera Xavier’s eyes, but she simply said, "Have you heard my name before?"
Susan Caldwell’s denial was almost subconscious. "Never!"
Vera Xavier stared at her fixedly. "If you’ve never heard of me, why such a strong reaction?"
Susan Caldwell struggled to control her emotions, telling herself that she absolutely could not let Vera Xavier know their true relationship. She took a deep breath and said, "I just think your name is very pretty."
"I like that reason." Vera Xavier’s eyes curved into crescent moons as she smiled. "To lose at my hands and still find my name pretty proves you’re a magnanimous person. I wasn’t planning on befriending you, because I thought you were too petty. But now I’ve changed my mind. You’re quite broad-minded after all. I’ve decided to be your friend."
Susan Caldwell had never, from beginning to end, considered being friends with Vera Xavier. Her earlier words were merely an attempt to save face or fish for information.
And now Vera Xavier was actually saying she wanted to be her friend!
Susan Caldwell stared at Vera Xavier without speaking. Vera smiled and asked, "What’s wrong? Don’t tell me your offer of friendship from before was fake?"
Susan Caldwell struggled to master her emotions and said, "Of course it was real. Vera Xavier, it’s a pleasure to meet you."
Vera Xavier reached out, took her hand, and said, "Susan Caldwell, I look forward to our time together."
One of them had a cold expression, the other a faint smile. But now that the tables had turned, the dynamic between them was completely different.
Just then, the belated ambulance finally arrived. Susan Caldwell took the injured Skylar Crowe and Leo Wright and left directly in the vehicle.
With her departure, the number of people in the room was cut by more than half, and the atmosphere once again grew strange.
Vera Xavier pulled Nathaniel Nathan over to see the Jade she had uncovered, showing it off like a treasure. "You said before that my good luck would run out, but look! It hasn’t run out yet! I cut open so much more Jade! Pick any piece you like. It’s my gift to you."
Nathaniel Nathan gave her a cold look. She immediately grabbed his hand, shaking it slightly. "There are a lot of people here, so do me a favor and just pick one!"
