Chapter 416 Who exactly is it?
Chapter 416 Who exactly is it?
"I'll ask you one more time, what was your purpose in entering the palace and getting close to the princess? Was it to steal the cards?" The interrogator was a bald, middle-aged man with many rings on his fingers that enhanced the card effects.
Raine raised his head, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, but his eyes remained resolute: "I've said it three times already, I'm the princess's research assistant, and we're working together to develop low-level card enhancement technology."
“An interesting statement,” Artie’s voice came from the shadows.
He slowly walked into the light. "A blacksmith's apprentice, yet an expert in advanced card theory?"
“My father was a scholar,” Raine looked directly into the Prime Minister’s eyes, “until he was framed and exiled by the Artie family.”
The Prime Minister raised an eyebrow almost imperceptibly: "Ah, so you're old Raven's son. That explains a lot."
He leaned down, his voice lowered to a whisper, "Tell me, did your father give you anything before he died? Like, a black card?"
Renn was startled.
His father did indeed give him a sealed metal box on the eve of his exile, instructing him not to open it except in the most critical moment.
He had never touched it for years, and had almost forgotten its existence.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Raine said, trying to keep his voice steady.
Artie stared at him for a long time, then suddenly straightened up: "Continue the interrogation. I need to know why he stole the cards."
He turned and left, while the interrogator picked up a card that gleamed coldly and walked toward Renn.
Just then, a commotion arose outside the interrogation room, followed by a familiar voice: "I am here on the princess's orders to check the situation. Who dares to stop me?"
It's Ms. Eileen! The chief card master of the palace, and one of Kaka's most trusted mentors.
Ms. Eileen strode in, followed by her maid.
"Get out, everyone," Eileen ordered. Once the door closed again, the interrogation room was empty.
Her serious expression immediately turned calm. "Raine, how are you feeling? Lord Artie didn't treat you well, did she? Well, Derek is his son, so of course you're the scapegoat."
"It was you! You knew perfectly well that Derek was the attacker!"
Eileen quickly made a shushing gesture to her mouth.
"Who told you to disobey? Didn't I tell you to follow the plan? You actually dared to try and slip away to tell the princess!"
“I didn’t!” Ryan’s voice trembled; he hadn’t even had a chance to speak.
“You dare say you don’t think that way?” Eileen questioned him.
“I…” Renn couldn’t deny that he had already considered giving up.
Rein recalled the black teleportation card Derek had used, and the Prime Minister's inquiry about the "black card."
It's impossible that Ms. Eileen was the only one directing all of this.
"How many of you are left?" Renn asked with difficulty.
"What, you've figured it out? Now that you've figured it out, remember what you should say and what you shouldn't say. But even if you do say it, who will believe you?" Eileen said dismissively.
He was just an ordinary citizen, yet he was easily thrown into jail by someone.
Eileen wanted to continue threatening Rein, but Kaka and the King had already arrived.
"Ms. Eileen, what are you doing here?" Kaka asked, puzzled.
"Your Highness, I heard you were attacked and I was worried about you, so I came to see you."
Eileen hadn't expected Kaka to arrive so quickly, so she could only come up with a random excuse.
Kaka couldn't understand why, instead of going to see her, he came to find Rein.
However, the most urgent thing is to check on Rennes first.
"Raine, how are you?" Kaka breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, Lord Arti did not torture Raine into confessing.
"I'm fine!" Ryan shook his head, but seeing the threatening look in Eileen's eyes, he swallowed the words he wanted to say.
"Father, Raine is innocent, let's release him!"
"Your Highness, the matter hasn't been investigated yet, I don't think Renn can leave!" Artie rushed over.
"Lord Arti, but Rein did nothing wrong! If you insist on imprisoning Rein, then Derek should be imprisoned too!" Kaka said angrily.
"This?" Arti hesitated. After all, he was his son, even if he was a bit stupid.
"What, is Lord Arti going to bend the law for personal gain?" Kaka continued to press.
"Kaka!" The king disapproved and stopped her.
“Your Highness, there’s no need to say more. My loyalty to the kingdom is beyond question. Since Your Highness believes Derek is a suspect, then let him be questioned as well!”
Lady Arti didn't believe her foolish son could do something like attacking the princess; he was completely fearless.
Ms. Eileen was somewhat dismayed; she hadn't expected that the Prime Minister would actually be willing to arrest his own son.
Isn't Derek the Prime Minister's biological son?
Ms. Eileen was getting anxious. Would that idiot Derek betray them?
With that in mind, she began to speak on the Prime Minister's side.
"Your Highness, Derek is a good boy, he shouldn't do anything on his own!"
"But Ms. Eileen, I saw Derek attack me with my own eyes!"
“Your Highness!” Lady Eileen shook her head. “It’s also possible that the thief used a card to impersonate Derek and framed him! He’s the Prime Minister’s son; he doesn’t need those missing cards. Besides, how could he possibly dare to attack Your Highness?”
After listening to Eileen's words, Kaka and the others felt that this was a very likely thing, or even more likely.
"Then, then we won't talk about Chadrick?" Kaka felt a bit aggrieved. It was Renn who was injured, but now Renn was being investigated.
"Since this matter involves Derek, let's summon him! Getting the details is the most important thing!" Lord Arti made the final decision.
Eileen was surprised that even after saying all that, she still couldn't dissuade everyone. She could only hope that Derek would be smarter.
Soon, the soldiers who had been sent to summon Derek returned to report.
"What? I can't find Derek?" Artie panicked. Where had that stupid son gone again?
"Yes, sir. We did not find Derek in the manor. According to your steward, Derek seemed to have ridden out of the city this morning."
Artie was speechless. This guy was acting like he had a guilty conscience.
It seems the card theft and the attack really are related to him!
It wasn't just Artie who thought this way; everyone else thought the same.
"Your Majesty, I suggest that a city-wide manhunt be issued for Derek. I know him well; there's a forest not far outside the city, and Derek wouldn't dare leave on his own. He must still be inside." Lord Arti decisively put aside his own family for the greater good.
Kaka had nothing to say then.
At this moment, Eileen was truly praying that Derek, that idiot, would be smarter; she had a feeling they were going to fall into his trap.
Now that Derek has started to run away, Ryan has naturally been cleared of suspicion.
