Chapter 64 Danger is Approaching
Lin Ran unfolded the towel and gathered it around the ends of her hair, wiping it from the roots to the tips.
She stood in front of Lin Ran, holding an umbrella that tilted slightly towards him. Rain slid down the edge of the umbrella and landed on her shoulders, but she ignored it.
Her hair slowly dried in Lin Ran's hands, and her head swayed gently as he dried her hair.
If someone else saw this, the most popular girl among the freshmen being dried under a sycamore tree—I wonder what it would look like. But with the rain so heavy, there wasn't a soul on the road.
"alright."
Lin Ran said.
Su Peixue took a plastic bag out of her pocket and handed it over. Inside were green plums, which had been washed and still had water droplets on their skin.
"Did you pick them?"
"Hmm. Song Yin found it by the culvert on the other side of the mountain. A grove of green plum trees." She opened the bag, picked up a plum with her delicate white fingers, and brought it to his lips. "Try it."
When Qingmei touched Lin Ran's lips, her fingertips gently brushed against his lower lip.
It's cool.
Su Peixue stared intently at Lin Ran, her almond-shaped eyes shimmering with tears.
Lin Ran's breath hitched.
The sweet and sour taste of the green plum melts in your mouth.
"It's almost time to close the dorms, let's go back."
The girl took Lin Ran's hand and pressed it against her cool, soft, innocent face. Her cheeks were cool and damp from the rainy night.
After sticking it on for two seconds, Su Peixue turned and ran into the rain. The transparent umbrella swayed a few times overhead before disappearing around the corner.
Lin Ran stood under the sycamore tree, clutching the blue towel in her hand, which still carried the scent of her hair.
The next morning, Lin Ran was awakened by the sound of a downpour.
Yao Ziwen sat on the bed, a tuft of hair sticking up from sleep. "This rain is fucking heavy!"
Li Yifan leaned down from the top bunk and yawned. "It's better than being in the sun. It's cooler."
Lin Ran glanced out the window; the rain was thick, and the sky was a dark gray.
Training will proceed as scheduled.
The playground was flooded, and when you stepped on it, water splashed up to your calves.
Each class stood at attention in the rain, while the instructors, wearing raincoats, walked back and forth in front of the ranks. The military training uniforms were soaked and clung to the body; a gust of wind made everyone shiver with cold.
Lin Ran stood in the middle of the third row. He was tall, stood straight, and looked straight ahead. Rain streamed down from the brim of his hat, and he blinked.
Without noticing, Lin Ran saw small pebbles and clods of earth rolling down the hillside. The water was becoming increasingly murky, carrying mud, and widening as it flowed downstream.
His heart skipped a beat.
He had seen this in his past life, not with his own eyes, but in the news, where it was said to be a precursor to a landslide.
First, small pebbles rolled down, then mud, and then the entire mountain slid down.
If there's enough rainfall and the slope is steep, the next step will be a mudslide. This training ground is in the middle of a valley, surrounded by mountains on three sides. Once a mudslide comes down, there won't be anywhere to run!
Zhao Qian was not at the front of the line; Wang Haochen was in charge.
He's been very unhappy these days. His original plan was to start as class monitor and build up his reputation before joining the student council, but now his words don't carry much weight in the class.
Just then, they saw Lin Ran step out of line without permission.
Wang Haochen already disliked Lin Ran, and since his classmates listened to Lin Ran more, he felt that Lin Ran had stolen his thunder.
"Lin Ran, why are you stepping out of line? Who told you to move? Are you going to lead the way in disobeying discipline?"
Lin Ran glanced at him, completely ignoring Wang Haochen, and walked to the front of the formation, addressing the students:
"There might be a landslide. We need to hurry and notify all the formations. The training base is in the middle of a valley. If a mudslide is triggered, it will be extremely dangerous."
The students all turned pale, some of them panicked!
If someone else had said that, they might have taken it as a joke.
But the person who said this was Lin Ran.
Lin Ran's words were very convincing to his classmates.
"Stop exaggerating. You're saying a landslide just because you're standing at attention in the rain? Are you making excuses for being lazy?"
Lin Ran sneered, "Then you stay here and don't move."
Then he said to the students, "Everyone, leave the training base immediately. When evacuating, stay away from the mountains and move to higher ground! Tell any classes you pass to evacuate immediately and in an orderly manner."
Seeing everyone about to leave, Wang Haochen, his face flushed, said, "I'm the squad leader! You're not allowed to leave the team without my permission! You have to listen to me when the instructor isn't here! Otherwise, I'll make you do a hundred push-ups!"
"sb".
Yao Ziwen chuckled, and everyone ignored him, paying no attention to Wang Haochen. They all began to leave.
He stood in the rain, his hand still raised, his mouth still open, as the ranks walked past him, the shoulders of their uniforms brushing against his, one after another, without stopping.
"No one is allowed to leave!"
Wang Haochen's face turned red!
As the class monitor, I was completely ignored!
Of course, he couldn't stay there any longer and act like a fool!
Wang Haochen decided to go and complain to the instructor! Lin Ran left the team without permission and scattered everyone, talking about some vague and unfounded mudslide, it's really ridiculous!
We'll see how badly he gets punished!
Lin Ran ran towards the foot of the mountain at the northernmost part of the training base.
Su Peixue's class was located closest to the mountain.
On the way, they bumped into several instructors coming out of the instructors' lounge. Seeing Lin Ran running around, they asked him what was going on.
Lin Ran explained the situation, saying that it was urgent and that a landslide could occur at any time.
Several instructors looked up at the hillside; the water had turned muddy, and the falling rocks were happening even faster than before.
Their expressions immediately changed.
"Report to your superiors immediately and notify all classes to evacuate on an emergency basis!"
When Lin Ran arrived at Su Peixue's class, they were sheltering from the rain at the foot of the mountain. A group of people huddled in a hollow at the foot of the mountain, some squatting and some standing.
Instructor Wu Weimin stood on the outermost edge. Lin Ran explained the situation to Wu Weimin. Wu Weimin walked to the side of the mountain and took a closer look. His expression immediately became serious!
Mud began to seep into the cracks in the rocks, and he knew what that meant. Turning around, his voice suddenly rose: "Everyone, get out of here immediately! Quickly!"
The students in the class felt a chill run down their spines and quickly gathered together, retreating with Wu Weimin.
Lin Ran looked around the crowd, but he couldn't see the person he was looking for, so he frowned.
The column had just withdrawn and hadn't even run a hundred meters when a muffled thud came from behind!
Everyone turned around abruptly!
The entire hillside seemed to have been pushed from behind by a tremendous force, with mud, rocks, and uprooted shrubs all swirling down the slope. The hollow where they had just taken shelter from the rain was now buried. The soil continued to slide down, piling up a new mound at the foot of the hill.
"Oh my god!"
"Holy crap! If we'd been half a minute later, we'd be done for!"
