Chapter 56 My Simple-Minded Husband
Chapter 56 My Simple-Minded Husband
“We two… have always had a good relationship. You said she came to me for help, I can’t just refuse, can I?” Shen Li looked at Gu Chang’an’s sincere and inquisitive face, and it was quite difficult for her to come up with this.
But she couldn't very well say that she had lived a whole life; it was hardly a glorious thing to end up like that.
Gu Chang'an had no doubts, and only asked, "Does A-Li trust her?"
"I believe you," Shen Li said firmly.
"Okay, leave it to me, don't worry, A-Li." Gu Chang'an covered her with the blanket again: "Sleep a little longer, no rush to get up."
"Mmm." Shen Li lay down, looking at him with a hint of expectation in her eyes.
Gu Chang'an leaned down and gently kissed her forehead, then avoided Shen Li's smiling gaze and turned away, saying, "I... went to court."
Shen Li really enjoyed seeing him shy, and couldn't help but grab his hand to tease him further, but when she touched it, it was icy cold, and she frowned.
It's already so cold even though I just got out of bed. What will I be like in winter?
"Don't let yourself get cold." Gu Chang'an tried to pull his hand away, but it was too late, so he could only remind him.
“There’s a famous doctor at my maternal grandfather’s house. I’m taking Yue’er to see him today, so I’m bringing him here for you to take a look.” Shen Li looked at him and said, “You can’t refuse to cooperate.”
She remembered from her previous life that Gu Chang'an hated taking medicine. He would avoid taking medicine for minor illnesses like colds, let alone for conditioning his body.
"Ah Li, my old injury is nothing serious." Gu Chang'an looked troubled. Yesterday he thought Ah Li was just saying it casually, but he didn't expect her to actually call a doctor for him.
The thought of taking herbal medicine three times a day made him feel bitter.
Seeing that he was trying to back out, Shen Li looked somewhat dejected: "But in my opinion, that's a very important matter. Does my husband think I've overstepped my bounds?"
"Ah Li, don't say that..." Gu Chang'an panicked when he saw her aggrieved look, squatted down in front of her, took her hand, and coaxed her:
"I was just afraid of the bitter taste and avoided taking the medicine. It would be wrong of me to disappoint Ah Li. Once the doctor prescribes the medicine, I will definitely drink it every single dose."
"Did you say this yourself, my husband?" Shen Li looked at him reproachfully. "What would you say if you denied it?"
"I will never go back on my promise to A-Li, I swear." Gu Chang'an was afraid that she would have any more doubts, so he immediately extended his hand.
"Don't be like that, it's not worth swearing an oath over such a small thing." Shen Li grabbed his hand and couldn't help but laugh at his serious expression.
Why is her husband so simple-minded?
Gu Chang'an breathed a sigh of relief when he saw her finally smile. He repeatedly said that he would not act on his whims again, lest anyone who didn't know better think he had made a huge mistake.
Shen Li sighed, realizing she might have overdone it this time; she should tone it down next time.
After breakfast that day, the imperial edict and rewards arrived. Shen Li led her servants to the gate to receive the decree, and then box after box of things were carried into the courtyard.
The eunuch read out the list of rewards for a full quarter of an hour, so much so that everyone in the mansion stared in disbelief.
The Imperial Concubine was incredibly generous, which shows how good her painting was. It's just a pity it was burned and the world can never see it again.
Shen Li gave the eunuchs who came to deliver the imperial edict a generous gift, and the eunuchs left happily.
"Congratulations to the lady," the servants said in unison.
To be granted the title of a third-rank noblewoman at such a young age is something that probably no one except for the imperial relatives can match.
Shen Li told everyone to go to the accounting office to collect twenty taels of silver. The servants all felt incredibly lucky to have met such a kind and generous master, and they were all overjoyed that morning.
"This was supposed to be a joyous occasion because of the painting, but now only the owner of the painting can't laugh," Lian Qiao said, removing the jewelry from Shen Li's head and body, her tone laced with sarcasm.
The young lady needs to change into a lighter, narrow-sleeved dress for the Duke's mansion; she needs to change out of the elaborate gown she wore to receive the imperial edict.
“Indeed, Consort Zheng treasured those paintings so much, she’s practically lost her soul now that they’ve been burned.” Peony laughed and then sighed, “It’s just a pity about Miss’s painting. You didn’t see it, sister, it was so beautifully painted.”
“Miss’s painting could be passed down through generations, it’s a pity to burn it. I heard that the talented painters in the capital have been lamenting it these past two days.” Lian Qiao’s mood was also a little down.
Shen Li imagined the painting being consumed by flames in front of her, but her expression remained calm as always: "People have their fate, and paintings have theirs. There's no need for regret."
Peony was heartbroken to see her mistress like this. Others assumed it was an accident that caused the burn, but they didn't know that the mistress had done it herself and how reluctant she was to do it.
"By the way, how is Ying'er's injury healing?" Shen Li asked, thinking of that unlucky guy.
“Those dozens of lashes were too severe; my leg was almost broken. The skin and flesh injuries have only just healed a little, but I still can’t get out of bed.” Lian Qiao said, shaking her head. “It looks like I’ll need to rest for another month.”
"Then let him stay and take good care of him. Don't let the servants neglect him." Shen Li wiped the rouge off her lips; it was too red and didn't suit her heroic attire.
"Don't worry, Miss, I'm keeping an eye on things." Lian Qiao said, a little scared, and whispered, "You made me so worried about you letting Shaoyao into the palace. I was afraid she would cause you trouble, and I was also afraid she would get beaten."
"Sister, you underestimate me, don't you? This time, not only did I not cause any trouble for Miss, but I also helped her." Upon hearing this, Peony raised her head high, looking extremely proud.
Lian Qiao asked with some skepticism, "Miss, is she serious?"
"It's genuine, very measured, only intimidating others, without actually doing anything." Shen Li nodded solemnly.
"Intimidation?" Lian Qiao gasped.
That's the palace! How could she go there to intimidate people?
“Of course I won’t act rashly.” Peony became even more smug after being acknowledged: “I’m much more restrained than Miss.”
She didn't even finish her sentence; in fact, she was trying to persuade the young lady not to cause trouble, but she couldn't stop her...
Lian Qiao wondered if she had misheard. If this was even more restrained than her mistress, did her mistress actually resort to violence?
Miss has changed quite a bit lately.
"Sister, I heard you got a lot of good treasures, let me come and see them." Shen Yue's lively voice came from outside the courtyard. The voice came from afar and grew closer, indicating that she was running over.
When Shen Li got up, the little girl had already run into the house. Her pink face was flushed from running, and her round eyes looked around. Her childish appearance filled Shen Li with a doting smile.
"You're here early enough. I'll show you around later, and you can take whatever you like." Shen Li tidied her stray hairs: "Run slower next time. You're not a child anymore, be careful not to fall."
“Sister, you underestimate me. I’m a martial artist, how could I fall down so easily?” Shen Yue said, looking at Shen Li carefully. “It’s rare to see you dressed so heroically, sister. You look exactly like a martial artist.”
"Today I will ask my grandfather how to learn martial arts," Shen Li said in a low voice.
Shen Yue nodded repeatedly: "Then let's go now."
"it is good."
"Wait, sister." Shen Yue suddenly stopped her and asked, "But I heard that the young lady from the Lin family left early this morning. If you are reluctant to meet her, we will have to go another day."
