Chapter 52 Start of Construction
Chapter 52 Start of Construction
The next morning, Lin's father got up first to take Lin Yu to the clan school, then picked up Li Deshan. On their way back, they happened to meet the people who came to deliver bricks at the village entrance.
"Brother Lin, I've brought the bricks!" The dark-skinned man from yesterday greeted Lin Hai as soon as he saw him.
He was driving a donkey cart, with another one following behind.
“Perfect, I’ll take you there,” said Lin’s father.
How many bricks were transported in this shipment?
"Five thousand! We'll make a few more deliveries later. We have twenty thousand bricks in stock, and we had them fired up the kiln again today! Don't worry, we'll deliver them all in ten days," said the brick factory worker.
"Okay." Lin's father thought that the house would take at least a month to build, and the bricks and tiles could keep up with the progress without delay.
Upon reaching the village entrance, the group encountered Zhang's wife, who was carrying a wooden basin to wash clothes. She was the same woman who had shown concern for Lin Yan when she was washing clothes by the river. Zhang's family lived next door to the Lin family and were quite familiar with their affairs.
Seeing Lin Hai riding a mule towards them, Zhang greeted him, "Uncle Lin! Where are you going?"
"It's Guangfeng's wife! I'm going home." Lin's father stared at her for a while before recognizing her as Zhang Guangfeng's wife from the Zhang family next door.
"Why are there so many bricks being hauled here!" Zhang only noticed the two donkey carts carrying bricks following behind Lin's father when he came over.
Blue bricks were a rare commodity in the village, and Zhang wondered which family Lin's father was helping out with.
"We're building a house at home, so we need to transport bricks."
“Build, build a house?!” Zhang was shocked.
"Is it at the foot of the mountain?"
"Yes, we'll live there from now on," Lin's father replied with a smile.
Before the family split up, the Zhang family was very friendly to the Lin family's eldest branch. When the family split up, Old Master Zhang even spoke up for Lin Hai.
"This, this is going to be a house built! And it's made of blue bricks!" Zhang was so surprised that she didn't know what to say. When the family divided the property, the eldest branch of the Lin family didn't get anything and still owed a hundred taels.
Although the hundred taels was said to be a misunderstanding, those two adults, one with poor health and the other with a leg problem, and also taking care of two children, managed to earn enough to build a large brick house in just two months.
Zhang was surprised, but also wanted to laugh. If the Lin family found out, they would regret it to death.
"Hahaha, yes, once it's built, please come over for a housewarming party." Mr. Lin was also quite happy.
"That's great!" Zhang patted her leg and asked, "Uncle, do you need any help?"
Normally, when people build houses in the village, they ask villagers to help each other out, and all they need is lunch. Zhang thought that the eldest branch of the Lin family and the old Lin family didn't get along well, so she was afraid that they would be short of manpower and asked her husband to help out.
"We've already hired workers, but if Guangfeng isn't too busy, he can come and help us out. We'll pay him." Lin's father thought that having more hands would make things easier and speed up the process.
"Give us back our wages! How can this be? How much money is this?" Zhang exclaimed in surprise.
“You have to pay to hire workers from outside, you can’t just not pay people from your own village to help,” Lin’s father said with a smile.
"That's great! I'll go tell Guangfeng right away." Zhang Shi didn't even bother washing her clothes, and with a big smile, she hurried home.
Lin's father took the brick factory workers home, unloaded the bricks, and said, "I'll haul them with you. I also have a cart here, which can carry more."
"Oh, no way, we agreed to deliver it," the brick factory worker quickly declined, thinking how incredibly kind this family was.
Lin Yan had also gotten up long ago. When she came out of the house and saw the blue bricks piled up outside, a sense of anticipation welled up inside her.
Seeing the two people outside exchanging pleasantries, he said, "Father, don't go yet, the workers will be here soon! Why don't you go to the village entrance to meet them? I'll show Master Li the place."
"That's true!" Lin's father suddenly realized.
"Then you can go!" Lin's father could only say goodbye to the brick factory.
The two men from the brick factory drove away again to pick up the next customer.
…………
And at this moment, at the village entrance.
"Grandma, do you know where Lin Hai lives?" Zhang Peng and his workers were talking to the elderly men and women under the big tree at the village entrance.
"Who?" The old woman tilted her ear.
"Lin Hai's family!"
"Lin Hai?" The old woman frowned, unable to recall who he was.
“That’s Lin Mazi’s eldest son,” said an old man with white hair, thin but energetic.
“They live on the east side,” the old man said definitively.
"No, no. They live on the south side. Their family separated from the Lin family and they moved out," a woman who was sewing shoe soles corrected.
"Oh, did they split up?"
"They separated, they separated, it was quite a mess back then!" Auntie was about to begin describing the lively scene on the day the family divided.
"Hey, Auntie! South, right?" Zhang Peng couldn't let these people gossip about the boss in front of so many workers, so he quickly interrupted.
"Ah, yes, do you see that mountain? It's at the foot of the mountain," the aunt pointed out to Zhang Peng.
Seeing their group of curious onlookers, they asked, "What are you all going to his house for? Are you going to cause trouble again?!"
"Oh, no, no, we're workers hired by Lin Hai to do the work," Zhang Peng quickly explained.
"Work? What kind of work?"
"Build a house!"
"What?! Building a house?! Ouch!" The auntie's hand was pricked by the thick needle she used to sew shoe soles.
"They're building a house? Where would they get the money to build a house? They didn't take anything when they divided the family property; they left with nothing!" the aunt said disdainfully.
“It’s building a house.” Zhang Peng nodded, also somewhat puzzled.
Yesterday, Lin Hai and his team were very confident and generous when hiring workers. The house they were building was also quite large, like that of a wealthy family. So why, when they arrived in the village, did everyone seem to be mocking them?
"This can't be a lie, can it?" Some of the workers were already suspicious after hearing what the aunt said.
“Impossible,” Zhang Peng said definitively.
"Yesterday I took them to invite the master, and Miss Lin treated me to wontons and even gave me 20 coins as wages!"
"Don't overthink it, everyone. What's the point of lying to us?" Li Ping thought of Lin Yan, who had stunned everyone yesterday, and realized that she really didn't seem like a con artist.
"Hey, Brother Lin Hai is here," Zhang Peng called out.
"Everyone's here, get in the car, I'll take you there." Lin Hai said, seeing the crowd gathered at the village entrance.
"Hey, hey, hey! Lin Hai, are you really going to build a house?" the auntie asked quickly when she saw the person in question arrive.
"Yes." Lin Hai nodded.
"They're really going to build it?" the aunt exclaimed in disbelief.
Seeing Lin Hai lead everyone away, they started gossiping with the others, "Where did Lin Hai get the money to build that house?!"
“They have to build something, the thatched huts at the foot of the mountain are in such a dilapidated state,” an auntie said.
"Didn't they say they've been doing business these past two months? They must have made money. Look, Lin Hai even bought a mule."
"Hmph, if you ask me, it's the Lin family that's been dragging down the eldest son's family all along. Lin Hai can earn a lot of money as a carpenter, but none of it has benefited him. Now that the family has separated, things are going well."
The aunt nodded, thinking to herself that she had to go and see for herself. She wondered how the Lin family would react to this news.
