Liu Fen hesitated for a moment after being asked the question.
Lin Qingping sensed that this medicine was definitely not as simple as it seemed!
Father-in-law Gu Dafu tried to smooth things over, saying, "If you don't want to drink, then don't. Never mind."
"Oh! This bottle is a good medicine that your father specially went to find a good doctor to prescribe!" Liu Fen stamped her feet anxiously, still wanting to try and get it back.
"A good doctor?" Lin Qingping frowned and pressed, "Which good doctor? I know all the doctors in Gujia Village. Tell me about them."
"This..." Liu Fen hesitated again, unable to utter a single word, before finally saying, "Anyway, it's for your own good."
Lin Qingping remained calm and, using feeling unwell as an excuse, skipped her meal and went back to her room to lie down.
While lying down, her eyes and ears didn't rest; she kept a close eye on her in-laws' movements outside.
The two were clearly acting strangely.
Out of the corner of her eye, Lin Qingping saw her in-laws exchanging glances, not saying a word, and she had no idea what they were trying to convey.
After that, Liu Fen, the mother-in-law, cleaned up the dining table and the kitchen.
As dusk began to fall outside, Gu Jia's day came to an end.
Lin Qingping noticed that her mother-in-law was no longer acting strangely, so she took her clothes and went to the backyard to take a shower. When she passed by the kitchen, she noticed that the dregs of the medicine that Liu Fen had brewed for her were wrapped tightly in a paper bag used for medicine and placed next to the kitchen trash can.
Lin Qingping pretended not to see anything and went to take a bath.
The medicine she took today worsened her pregnancy nausea, which had finally started to improve. She quickly took a shower and went back to her room to lie down. But when she checked the kitchen trash can, sure enough, the packet of medicine residue was gone.
During this time, Liu Fen came to ask her several times if she wanted something to eat, and she would cook something for her.
Lin Qingping just waved her hand, looking drowsy and as if she was in a very uncomfortable sleep.
Liu Fen then tiptoed out.
It wasn't until it was completely dark that Lin Qingping heard no sound from the house, and even faintly heard her in-laws snoring in the next room, before she quietly got up.
She figured that medicine would be hard to get; her mother-in-law kept it in her room like a treasure, so she could only go find the dregs.
She turned on a flashlight, intending to rummage through the trash cans, but as soon as she got to the front yard, she could faintly smell the medicine.
Since becoming pregnant, her nose has become much more sensitive than usual, especially to odors that bother her; even a tiny bit of one becomes amplified to her as very pungent.
In other words, the mother-in-law dumped the dregs of the medicine in the yard?
She searched around but couldn't find it on the ground.
While smelling and shining a flashlight, they eventually discovered that the strongest smell came from the area of her bread oven.
She walked over quickly, and sure enough, the smell of medicine was particularly strong here!
She turned on her flashlight and opened the kiln door. The smell of medicine hit her face, making her feel like vomiting. The kiln was going to be ruined!
She groped her way to find the dregs of the medicine and was surprised to discover that there was a layer of dregs on the bottom layer of the kiln where the fire was lit.
She grabbed a handful, wrapped them in newspaper, turned off the flashlight, and went back inside.
The next day, she took the dregs of the medicine to the clinic and asked the doctor there to take a look and figure out what kind of medicine it was.
The doctor examined the medicine carefully, picking up every crumb and speck from the dregs to look at and smell them, and finally expressed his predicament to Lin Qingping.
"I don't know what kind of prescription this is. It's just a common medicine, mostly herbs, but some of the ingredients are from animals..." the doctor said to her, then hesitated, "Do you feel any discomfort after taking it?"
