Chapter 152 Concealment
"Mu Pengzheng's DNA has been matched with that man's DNA... and they don't match..."
Li Chenxu seemed to be video chatting with someone; the sound coming from the computer was faint and intermittent. Mu Xiaoyu had to strain her ears to hear even a little bit. But even that was enough for her right now.
"How many times has it been tested? Are you sure there's really no problem?"
Only two dim wall lamps were lit in the study, casting a yellowish glow that made Li Chenxu's expression appear somewhat gloomy. His handsome face darkened further, especially upon hearing his subordinate's reply.
"It's...it's already been confirmed, sir...should we also test your wife's DNA? I suspect her..."
The sounds behind them grew fainter and fainter. Even though Mu Xiaoyu held her breath and listened intently, she still couldn't make out what the person was saying at the end. Mu Xiaoyu was about to continue listening when, just then, footsteps suddenly came from the bottom of the stairs, as if someone was coming up.
Mu Xiaoyu was startled and quickly and carefully bypassed the study to return to her bedroom.
She walked very fast, reaching the bedroom in just a few seconds. Only when the door closed did she realize with a start that her heart was pounding.
Mu Xiaoyu placed her hand on her rapidly beating heart, slowly calming her complex and indescribable emotions.
She only overheard the gist of Li Chenxu's conversation with his subordinate; she didn't know the specifics. However, based on what she had heard, Li Chenxu was clearly hiding something from her.
She doesn't know why Li Chenxu is hiding those things from her, nor does she know his intentions. However, she won't rashly suspect Li Chenxu until she knows the truth.
However… what Mu Xiaoyu couldn't understand was the conversation between Li Chenxu and his subordinate just now. Mu Pengzheng was clearly dead. When he was alive, he had severed ties with his relatives long ago because of his personality. Later, most of the Mu family died in an earthquake more than ten years ago. She should be the only person related to Mu Pengzheng by blood.
But the implication of what Jing Li's subordinates said just now was that they suspected Mu Pengzheng had some kind of relationship with other people.
However, Mu Pengzheng couldn't possibly have any relationship with anyone else, so why were they doing this?
With so many strange things happening lately, could it be that Li Chenxu is investigating this matter?
Mu Xiaoyu only overheard the gist of Li Chenxu's conversation with his subordinates, and didn't even hear the core content of their dialogue, so no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't figure it out.
She had no background or connections, so even if she wanted to investigate something, the only person she could rely on was Li Chenxu. Even if she secretly paid to investigate, it would be difficult to escape Li Chenxu's notice.
More importantly, Li Chenxu is now making it clear that he doesn't want her to know about this...
This was the first time Mu Xiaoyu had felt so conflicted since her rebirth. Just then, her phone rang.
The cheerful ringtone was especially clear in the quiet bedroom. Mu Xiaoyu had been immersed in what had just happened, and when she suddenly heard the phone ring, she was startled and hurriedly answered the phone.
"Sister Xiaoyu, are you asleep?"
The person who called was Bai Luo. For some reason, Bai Luo's voice sounded a little different from usual, carrying a hint of anxiety and worry, as well as a hint of hesitation.
Mu Xiaoyu's intuition told her that something was wrong, so she quickly replied, "I'm not asleep. Is something the matter that's causing you to call so late? Luo Luo... your tone sounds a bit off..."
Seemingly surprised by Mu Xiaoyu's quick wit, Bai Luo immediately fell silent on the other end of the phone. Mu Xiaoyu didn't urge her, but simply waited silently for Bai Luo's reply.
Time ticked by, and after what seemed like an eternity, Bai Luo finally spoke up: "Sister Xiaoyu, I might not be able to explain this to you clearly over the phone. But this matter is probably very important to you. I'm your fan, and now I'm your friend, so I feel I must tell you. If you have time, could you come to my house tomorrow?"
Mu Xiaoyu was confused by Bai Luo's words, but when she thought of Bai Luo's identity and what she had overheard outside the study, her heart skipped a beat. After hesitating for a few seconds, Mu Xiaoyu finally couldn't help but ask, "Luo Luo, is what you're telling me related to these two incidents?"
"Yes, but it might be more complicated than this."
"Okay, I'll come over tomorrow."
Upon hearing Bai Luo's words, Mu Xiaoyu agreed almost without hesitation. To ensure Mu Xiaoyu's safety and protect the Bai family's privacy, Bai Luo and Mu Xiaoyu agreed that the Bai family would send a car to pick Mu Xiaoyu up at the appointed time tomorrow.
Mu Xiaoyu was worried that Li Chenxu would overhear her conversation with Bai Luo if he came in, so she didn't talk to Bai Luo for too long. After briefly confirming the matter, the two hung up the phone.
After hanging up the phone, Mu Xiaoyu felt as if a huge rock was pressing down on her heart, making it almost impossible for her to breathe.
I was perfectly fine before eating, but now, less than an hour later, I've suddenly been bombarded with so many complicated messages.
Mu Xiaoyu's mind was in turmoil, and her mood was inexplicably depressed.
Fortunately, she wasn't a weak person. Besides, Li Chenxu keeping it from her didn't necessarily mean he was treating her badly. If it was for her own good, it would be too unfair to him if she doubted him like before.
So before Li Chenxu returned to the bedroom, Mu Xiaoyu took a shower and quickly calmed herself down.
Previously, she only had a clear goal and plan for her work, but now she sees that she has to slowly plan and investigate many things, and cannot rely on Li Chenxu.
She knew that Li Chenxu did many things for her own good, protecting and accommodating her in everything he did. Previously, Mu Xiaoyu hadn't felt anything special, only a sense of sweetness and happiness.
But now, I feel like a canary trapped in a gilded cage, protected and helpless, unable to do anything, only able to live under the protection of the other party.
She didn't want to be a caged bird. Even without a background, there were some things she wanted to do herself. Even if she couldn't figure them out immediately, she was willing to wait. After all, she had plenty of patience and time!
