Chapter 387 - 21: Burst Kill Runes, One-Click Matched (Part 2)
Chapter 387 - 21: Burst Kill Runes, One-Click Matched (Part 2)
Westheid gazed at the battlefield and said:
"It looks like the Royal Court’s warriors aren’t having an easy time. Should I send in the Qinghui Guard to help?"
"You may do as you please, but a landing zone hasn’t even been established yet. Even if you were to send the Guard forward, their impact would be limited. The battlefield isn’t wide enough to accommodate more troops... so my advice is to wait for now. This battle will last a long time, and we still don’t know where the Master of Decay is."
Amithren said seriously.
"Hmm... that makes sense. We’ll wait, then."
The struggle for the City in the Lake lasted the entire day. Westheid watched as the wreckage of one warship after another sank beneath the waves. Both sides were fighting with bloodshot eyes. In this Land of Rhythm, which had not seen war for a thousand years, the conflict that erupted showed no signs of inexperience. An abundance of martial spirit was an instinct etched into the very bones of the people of the Mortal World.
In the end, the Royal Court Legion gained a slight edge. Relying on their vast numbers and superior equipment, they forced their way to the City in the Lake and even began replacing the banners of the Master of Decay with proper Royal Court flags, reconnecting the city to the Grand Ensemble.
Westheid could even hear the cheers of the Royal Court Elves. Just as he was thinking the Demon itself wouldn’t appear...
"DUM DUM DONG—"
Suddenly, a series of rumbles echoed from the distant horizon.
The sound of the Grand Ensemble, which had just begun to rise, was instantly cut off. The mournful, lingering sound of a bone flute began to play.
Several floating cubes drifted in from the horizon. Their surfaces were smooth and flat, inscribed with countless arcane Runes. A livid, bluish light flickered across them, making them look like colossal boulders suspended in the sky.
Set into the surfaces of these incomparably magnificent floating monoliths were numerous platforms. Upon these platforms, dense military formations were arrayed.
Well-equipped Bone Demon guards in orderly ranks; ethereal and gloomy Ghostly Corpse Witches in swarms; and giant constructs of various forms...
These grim, orderly legions gathered on the cubic monoliths, casting a heavy, oppressive feeling like dark clouds blanketing the sky.
The floating cubes moved quickly, arriving above the City in the Lake within a few breaths. A few casually cast spells were enough to force the Royal Court Army troops who had just mounted the city walls to retreat in fear.
Westheid looked up. At the very center of the fortress, which was formed from the magnificent constructs, was a skeletal figure seated upon a massive throne.
Unlike ordinary Bone Demons, this skeletal figure wore Heavy Armor with far more intricate patterns. Its skeletal body and ferocious antlers were adorned with glittering gems, fine jade, and Gold, creating a truly magnificent and dazzling sight.
Wearing a crown that signified its status and draped in a crimson-tasseled robe, the skeletal figure had a Blade Spear leaning against its throne, one suited for the size of a giant.
’The Master of Decay... he actually came to the battlefield in person.’
The towering Demon Form, still as a statue, stared down at the world below, its empty eye sockets burning with crimson Spiritual Fire.
Back when they were suppressed and sealed by Emperor Qianlu, the Demons had all been in the form of Spirit Bodies. After breaking free, they had all been impatient to forge physical forms for themselves. And judging by the Master of Decay’s appearance, he had definitely added a lot of fine details to his own.
"Mortals... you dare trespass upon my Domain?"
"How audacious! Your deaths will not be mourned!"
A dull voice buzzed in everyone’s mind. The Master of Decay gripped his Blade Spear and struck it down hard.
"DONG—"
A vast sound wave spread out. It was the sound of the Master of Decay manipulating the node of the City in the Lake. For Transcendents on the orthodox Path of Resonance, the resulting shockwave was practically an inciter of cultivation deviation. As the raging sound wave swept past, more than half of the Elf Warriors clapped their hands over their ears and collapsed to their knees in agony. Some even threw themselves directly into the lake.
"Duke Qinghui!"
Facing the Demon’s true form, whose very presence could neutralize most of the Royal Court Army’s combat strength, the once-bravely advancing Elf Military Officer could only roar and turn his hopeful gaze toward his own reinforcements.
Seeing this, Westheid slowly rose to his feet on the Wave-Breaking Ship at the rear. Across the surface of his powerful body, the Runes that had been inscribed on him earlier began to glow with a gold and silver light, like fine blood vessels faintly visible beneath his skin.
"Berserker-style Rune set matched and loaded. Who is the Master of Decay? I will end its life!"
Westheid laughed, leaping into the air. The Light of Qinghui condensed around his outstretched arms, instantly forming a platinum-gold Great Bow.
River of Qinghui—Radiant Bow.
Westheid had spent the entire day having Runes inscribed upon him. His capacity was absurdly high, allowing him to accommodate any and all Runes. And Amithren hadn’t been wrong; the enhancement from the Runes of Music was proving remarkably effective for him now.
’Power! I can feel it surging within me!’
The best proof of this was that Westheid had already begun to use the River of Qinghui! To do so against a Celestial God’s Shadow-level enemy showed his absolute confidence.
Raising the Great Bow high above his head, Westheid slowly drew back the bowstring of soft light.
Magic Power gathered like a storm, forming a vortex in front of the Great Bow. Then, a Light Arrow began to manifest.
The extreme Radiant Light made everything around it dim. The light warped space itself, and iridescent, glassy colors drifted through the air. Once he had finished gathering power, Westheid released the bowstring.
"VMMMM—"
A deep rumble echoed in everyone’s ears. The Guards rubbed their faintly ringing ears, staring without blinking as the dazzling Light Arrow shot toward the sky.
Then, it plummeted.
In just a few breaths, it crossed an unimaginable distance, soaring up and then arcing down, aimed straight at one of the cubic fortresses suspended in the air.
The Floating Fortress sensed the attack was aimed at it. The dense Runes covering its surface immediately began to shift, constructing a defensive Technique. A full half of the Runes were involved, showing they were not underestimating the threat.
But they weren’t taking it seriously enough. When the heavy Light Arrow descended and made contact with the cubic fortress’s shield, an explosion of light and heat erupted from the point of impact.
"BOOM—"
Amidst the earth-shaking, sky-trembling vibrations, the Light Arrow struggled to break through the Floating Fortress’s defenses and slammed into the cubic fortress.
An immense shockwave rushed out like a tidal wave. The energy from the exploding platinum-gold Light Arrow spread across the fortress’s surface like plasma. When the aftershocks subsided, what appeared before everyone was a Floating Fortress with a grievous wound blasted into it.
Having shot down one Floating Fortress, Westheid didn’t pause for a moment. He planted the next condensed Light Arrow on the ground, stepped on the bow with one foot, drew the string with one hand, and continued to madly pour in Magic Power. He burned through his reserves of Rune energy, pushing the Great Bow to rapidly condense more Light Arrows.
"WHOOSH—"
"WHOOSH—"
"WHOOSH—"
Fierce winds swept both banks of the river, kicking up sheets of water that raced past. Again and again, the Light Arrows stirred up storms, stole the light, and bombarded the Rune Techniques of the cubic fortresses.
Westheid fired the Light Arrows with total concentration, pouring in his Magic Power without holding anything back. With extreme ruthlessness, he continuously sniped the Floating Fortresses suspended in the sky.
The front lines of the Bone Demon army, knocked askew by the aftershocks of Westheid’s Light Arrows, were completely unable to organize an effective defense or counterattack. They were reaped and destroyed by volley after volley of heavy arrows.
"Who is that?!"
Westheid had acted too quickly. The Master of Decay had never expected such a powerful enemy to be hidden behind the Royal Court Legion. The Spiritual Fire in its skeletal eye sockets flickered, and it immediately turned its gaze to Westheid’s position.
By this point, however, Westheid’s rapid-fire sniping had mostly ceased. He locked his gaze firmly on the King of the Cannibal Bone Demon.
"Huuuh..."
The Dragon Soul Furnace thrummed. Embers and lightning, like a blazing sun, radiated from the Warrior’s powerful muscles, which were far tougher than adamant or steel. The dust motes in the air and the water of the great lake beneath his feet all spontaneously retreated from Westheid as if he were the epicenter.
Westheid gripped Shadow-Born in one hand and held out the other. The River of Qinghui forged a Sword Spear from nothingness in his palm. He gripped it tightly, sank slightly at the knees, and then...
"BOOM—"
