Chapter 628 World 86
Chapter 628 World 86
“I thought I’d forgotten something,” Catherine cleared her throat, shook Stella’s hand, and stepped forward to the group.
"Romeo, Charlie, when did you arrive?"
Romeo answered succinctly: "Last night."
Charlie was much more talkative than him, adopting a clingy attitude that was half complaining and half flirting: "Didn't Miss say she wanted to take a stroll around the city after finishing her business?"
“We arrived late last night and didn’t want to disturb Miss’s rest. Also, my uncle said that Miss had agreed to attend the auction, so we came to see you this morning.”
"I didn't expect that when we got to the hotel, you had already left. If we hadn't asked someone, we would have missed you."
Stella was glad she had her hood up; otherwise, she might not have been able to control her facial expression.
Although Charlie was handsome and had a pleasant voice, the way he spoke gave Stella a severe sense of disconnect.
In short, he doesn't have much sincerity; speaking like that is just his habit.
Stella, taking advantage of the hood, glanced sideways and found the other three's behavior quite interesting.
The king pursed his lips, his expression unfriendly, and the knight adopted aristocratic airs, not even bothering to greet the other side.
The duchess lingered on Charlie's face for a few more moments, but quickly looked away. However, her expression didn't exactly show much affection.
It seems their relationship isn't very harmonious.
Stella stood to the side for a while, listening to Charlie trying his best to invite Catherine and the others to stay.
The king and his companions exchanged glances and all rejected the proposal.
Charlie hadn't expected them to be so determined, so he had to resort to his last resort: inviting Catherine aside for a detailed discussion.
Although they were standing a little far away, Stella could vaguely hear a few words, nothing more than something about the last item in the auction.
Catherine glanced at Charlie before returning to the King and the others, saying, "You all go back to school first. I have some things to take care of and will leave later."
The knight immediately said, "Let's go with you. We came out together, so of course we should go back together. Otherwise, we won't know how to answer the teacher's questions."
The king and the duchess both said the same thing.
Catherine insisted, lowering her voice: "I have a letter to deliver to the Dean. If you don't go back, who will help me deliver it?"
Since the letter is to be delivered to the dean, only the few of them can go back in person; otherwise, if it were sent through normal channels, it would take who knows how long to arrive.
Most importantly, their dean, as a deity of magic, receives a lot of letters every day, and even more that he doesn't open himself. The pile of unopened letters is almost enough to fill an entire building.
Who knows if a letter sent back through normal channels will actually be opened and read?
“Then let’s go back first,” the king decided, and the knight and the duchess no longer objected.
Catherine hurriedly took out a piece of paper, wrote a few words, and handed it to them, adding, "The items at this auction are quite interesting. Could you ask the dean if there's anything he likes?"
After the three left through the magic circle, Charlie stepped forward again, feigning concern, and said, "They left in such a hurry. Staying a few more days wouldn't have caused any trouble."
With no outsiders around, Catherine simply snorted, "Aren't they blocking you from talking to me? Do you want that?"
Charlie's eyes were filled with tender affection: "If this is Miss Catherine's wish, I don't mind suffering some injustice."
Catherine glanced at him but didn't answer. Instead, she asked Stella, "Darling, are you planning to leave now, or stay with me for a few more days?"
Stella felt Catherine squeeze her hand and said knowingly, "Since you're staying, I'll keep you company."
“Okay,” Catherine laughed, haughtily raising her chin at Charlie and the others, “Let’s go back.”
Charlie took out a magic carriage and eagerly invited them to sit inside.
The carriage started moving under the control of magic, and returned to the City of Chaos. However, instead of heading to the inn, it stopped in front of a luxurious detached house.
“Miss Catherine, this is the temporary accommodation I have arranged for you. If you need anything or are not satisfied with it, please feel free to tell Romeo and me.”
Catherine nodded and took Stella's hand as they walked inside.
As soon as they entered, a vampire dressed as a butler appeared before them. He was wearing a tailcoat and bowed, saying, "Welcome, Miss Catherine and Miss Stella. I am your temporary butler, Joe."
When the temporary butler introduced himself, he seemed very respectful, but Stella felt uncomfortable all over, as if she were being watched by something.
She became wary, and after noticing Charlie's respect for Joe, she refused to take off her cloak even after entering the house.
Catherine sensed something was wrong and came to ask her after she settled in.
"Stella, do you feel something's wrong?"
Stella nodded: "I think that Joe is a bit dangerous; he has malicious intentions towards me."
Catherine frowned. "I'll make him leave right now."
Stella stopped her: "If we send someone else, we're still on someone else's turf."
"He's a vampire. He appears to leave, but secretly transforms into a bat, hides anywhere, and only comes out at night. Who would know?"
"It would be better to let him stay here; that way, we can more easily track his movements."
Catherine knew she was right, but doing nothing wouldn't do the same thing.
“I’ll move in with you,” Catherine said, thinking it was a really good idea.
"Unless they no longer care about me as an ally, they will always have more to consider."
Seeing Stella hesitate, Catherine added, "Of course, it's also my own choice to live with you. I miss the days we traveled together last year so much."
Stella had no choice but to agree, planning to contact Wang at another time.
Having received her permission, Catherine didn't plan to go back. After all, there were two pillows here, and she could use them.
As night deepened, the howling winds, carrying sand and dust, raged through the chaotic city.
There was a gentle knock on Stella's door.
"Miss Stella, are you still awake?"
Stella opened her eyes and looked towards the door. Before she could get up, Catherine, who was beside her, sat up.
"Who is it, knocking at the door in the middle of the night?" Catherine replied angrily. "Who gave you permission to disturb me at night without being summoned?"
The voice outside the door paused for a moment, then hesitated before asking, "Miss Catherine?"
Catherine sensed something was wrong with the voice, put on her coat, got up, and opened the door: "Romeo?"
Catherine looked around, then pulled him inside, but wouldn't let him go any further. Standing at the door, she asked him, "What brings you here to see Stella?"
Having seen her before, Stella no longer wore a hood, and her cloak was buttoned up with two buttons, but her specially made elven attire underneath could still be seen as she walked. Unlike other elves' clothes, the pearls used for the buttons on Stella's garment came from the deep sea.
Romeo paused for a moment when he saw the pearl's appearance before saying, "My teacher said Miss Stella might be in danger, and asked me to warn her."
"Danger?" Stella and Catherine probably understood, but they asked as if they knew nothing, "What danger?"
Romeo replied, "The teacher said someone suggested trapping Miss Stella and weaving her memories with magic."
Stella asked curiously, "Do you know who this 'someone' is?"
Romeo hesitated and said, "I heard it's a prince of the vampires. My teacher said he wanted to find Miss Stella for other reasons as well."
Catherine, impatient with his one-question-one-answer style and lack of clarity, finally asked, "Is he the father of that stupid vampire who chased after Stella but ended up dying in the Valley of Death?"
Romeo nodded.
"What's Joe's relationship with that vampire?" Stella paused, then continued, "Is Joe the prince?"
“I don’t know,” Romeo replied quickly. “Charlie would probably know more about it.”
Ask Charlie? Judging from the respect he shows Joe, asking him anything is pointless; who knows if he's telling the truth?
For a vampire like Charlie, faction is important, but he will not disobey the orders of the vampire royal family unless he himself is willing to be a traitor.
Having said what he needed to convey, Romeo prepared to leave.
Catherine wanted to ask something more, but Stella stopped her.
Stella took out a beautiful coral bracelet and handed it to Romeo: "Thank you for telling me all this. This is a gift for you."
"The teacher sent me," Romeo said with difficulty, looking away from the bracelet, only to have Stella throw it into his arms.
Romeo hurriedly caught the bracelet and held it like a precious treasure.
Catherine sensed something: "Stella said that if she gives it to you, it's yours, so just accept it."
After Romeo finished packing and left, Catherine closed the door: "I've given him pearls and corals from the sea before, and he never seemed to both refuse and want them like this. I thought he no longer cared about the ocean."
"I never expected that a coral bracelet would be something he would cherish so much."
"Stella, is there anything special about your beads?"
“His attention was focused on the buttons on my clothes,” Stella said, lifting her cloak slightly to show Catherine. “I bought these pearls at the mermaid market when I went to the mermaid village.”
"That string of coral beads from earlier was one too."
Catherine seemed to suddenly understand something: "You mean, Romeo, he..."
Catherine stopped, but didn't say anything.
Stella nodded to her.
According to what Romeo, Charles, and others had previously revealed, Romeo became a siren very early, possibly even when he was very young.
After having a teacher, he resolutely left the ocean and never returned.
Romeo has never been interested in ordinary marine treasures.
Today, Stella suddenly discovered that the bead came from the Mermaid Clan, which made Romeo particularly interested.
“Interesting,” Catherine murmured, then quickly dropped the subject and asked, “Romeo and his teacher certainly know more. Stella, why didn’t you let me continue asking?”
“Because it’s pointless, you won’t get anything out of them by asking again,” Stella said. “The fact that they came to inform you in advance is already a sign of their sincerity, but they won’t offend the vampires because of your face or because of my identity.”
Stella emphasized, "Catherine, they are the ones standing together."
Catherine blinked. "That's true."
"However, it seems that living here is still too dangerous."
"Stella, how about we go somewhere else tomorrow?"
“Even if we go somewhere else, it’s still a chaotic city,” Stella said, pulling Catherine back to sleep. “We’ll deal with whatever comes our way. Instead of worrying about things that haven’t happened yet, we should take this time to rest.”
Catherine knew the reasoning behind it all. Normally, she wouldn't have said those words. It was just that she lost her composure for a moment when facing Stella.
Catherine lay down again, and this time she was truly fast asleep.
Stella, however, lay on her side with her face turned toward the window.
The wind outside the window finally stopped, and the sky began to lighten with the first light of dawn.
The sound of something flapping its wings drifted away from under the eaves outside the window.
Stella opened her eyes, her gaze clear and bright, without a trace of the drowsiness of just waking up.
When Catherine woke up, Stella was already sitting at the table eating.
“Stella, you’re up so early again,” Catherine said, still a little sleepy. She sat for a while before washing up.
Stella still didn't come downstairs, and Catherine brushed off Joe's question.
With one day left before the auction, Catherine chose to stay instead of going out, depending on whether she was with Stellar.
Seeing this, Stella offered to go out with her.
“I’ve already been to the market, but you haven’t. Since you’ve come all this way, you should at least go and take a look.”
Catherine glanced at her: "Alright, since Stella is willing to come with me, I'll have to have a good look around."
As she left, Catherine specifically asked, "Should we lock the door?"
“Either is fine,” Stella whispered. “I put a mirror inside.”
This is, of course, a mirror with special functions.
Catherine's lips curled up slightly, then quickly fell back into a smile: "Then we don't need to rush back."
Once seated in the carriage, Catherine addressed Joe, who was standing to one side, saying, "The room is very clean; there's no need to send anyone to tidy it up."
Joe agreed, and the carriage drove off towards the bustling street.
Catherine knew that many of the creatures present had very sensitive ears, so she didn't speak, but pulled Stella over and wrote in her palm.
[Stella, do you think someone will have already been in the room by the time we get back?]
I bet there will be.
Stella also wrote in her palm.
[Since you guess yes, then I'll guess no.]
[Otherwise, if we both make the same guess, it won't be interesting.]
In fact, Stella wasn't just making a different choice from Catherine; she genuinely believed that no one would go to her room.
First, there was the little bat that had been guarding outside all night, then there was the upcoming auction, and Catherine had specifically mentioned it before leaving.
It would be strange if they still insisted on going in.
Although they had made an agreement, they did not place any bets.
When the carriage arrived at its destination, Catherine got off first, then turned back and reached out to Stella.
Stella had just taken her hand when she felt something and suddenly looked up, only to unexpectedly meet a pair of familiar eyes.
